I love the old mills that surround the area near where I live. They are filled with so much history and it's sad to see these two old mills now vacant. The one in Phenix (up top) was housing several businesses until about a month ago. After taking the picture I saw a for sale sign on the front of the building. It was a grist mill from at least 1737. It was one of Rhode Island's earliest textile mills.

The other mill is in Hope. This mill was build in the 1830's. It was supposed to be turned into condo's until the economy slide. You can also read more about the challenge of  renovations here.

I always wonder about the people that worked in the mills and how the conditions were there. Did they work 8 hours or were they 12 hour days? How did they see at night? And just how HOT did it get during the summer in the mill and the upper levels?

Do you have old mills near where you live?

  1. There are old mills along the rivers here--mostly much smaller. Some have been converted to other uses and some are just falling down bit by bit.

    1. Hi Olga, I find that so sad that some of the old mills are just falling down. They have such a rich history.

  2. Awesome pics Lisa! We have some old mills in Northern Delaware, not so much in Southern but I did tour them as a child. A lot of history there. Thank you so much for sharing Rhode Island with me. It's fabulous getting to know your state by your blog. :)

    1. Thanks Brenda. I'm glad it is helping you to explore the area. Maybe you'll come up one day. I would not recommend it in the winter :)

I felt like you have been to Holland ;) Really cool. Haven't seen such here though. Only on pics :)

    1. Thanks Mayura. I'll have to look up mills in Holland to compare. Thanks for the input on that. No mills in your area?

    2. Not in our area Lisa :) Here we mostly have paddy fields managed by farmers.

      Cheers...
