This old mill is in the Crompton section of town was known for corduroy manufacturing. It was named after Samuel Crompton who invented the spinning mule. This mill thrived in the late 19th and early 20th century. It ceased cotton operations in 1964. There have been some smaller companies occupying parts of the mill complex since 1964. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
How old are the mills in your area?
Love the pics Lisa! Thanks, as always, for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brenda, I can't believe how many mills there are around our little state.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see that at least part of the mill is in good repair and is in use. Too often beautiful old buildings like this are simply torn down.
ReplyDeleteGeorge, that is true. I've seen a few others not so fortunate as you say. It's sad to see such buildings filled with history gone to waste.
DeleteHi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteNice to see more of 'em dear. Are they only in your area and they are for sale too? :)
Cheers...
Thanks Mayura, they are in my area and some are for sale, but not all of them. Thanks!
DeleteHi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteFound your blog after a little slogging through the virtual jungle.
Mills have a lot of character - reminders of the industriousness of our forefathers (and mothers). Kind of sad when you see the shape they're in.
We have some in our area dating back from the mid-1800's. Here's a few shots.
Thanks Rick, I'll have to check those out too. I love the history of them. Appreciate your comment too.
