Fort Wetherill State Park in Graffiti by the Ocean
I took my first drive since the accident in February to visit Fort Wetherill State Park in Jamestown, a small island near Newport, RI. It was a beautiful May day but some fog was still around as you see in the pictures above.
It is an old artillery fort similar to Fort Adams in Newport but this one is abandoned with graffiti throughout the old fort. You can walk around the enclosed fence and find broken fence to get into the historical old forts throughout the 61 acre park.
This old military site dates back to the American Revolution. The fort was built to protect Newport from British attacks. During the revolution for a short time the French fleet occupied Jamestown.
Fort Wetherill is right off the Atlantic ocean and there are breathtaking ocean views atop this historic fort.
Do you have historic military forts near you?
(If you ever visit be sure to take along bug spray and don't go alone. The day I visited there was someone attacked - it may have been a fight but police were around to walk everyone out until they could find the person.)
Love the pictures Lisa. It's a shame that crime is affecting these beautiful places. Be careful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brenda, I know - been going there for at least 30 years and first time something like that happened there. Oh yes, you got that....Do you have any of them in your neck of the woods or along the coast in Maryland?
DeleteThere are places all around here to go exploring but none quite like what you've shown, or at least I haven't ventured far to find anything like that. I used to be such the great explorer until I got skin cancer and then my explorations in sunlight change. Bah humbug. :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these pics with us Lisa. It's a shame such a pretty place had to be treated like that.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Corina. Some of the graffiti is very pretty and colorful though. Do you have anything like these in your area?
DeleteThere are a few old forts around Lake Champlain, Fort Ticonderoga on the NY side probably the most famous. They make for interesting school field trips.
ReplyDeleteHi Olga, thanks, that would make a nice day or weekend trip too! I really enjoy visiting the old forts.
DeleteReally nice photos! Enjoyed!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cowgirl! Have a great new week and month.
